Goals of the Climate Convergence
It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the problem of climate change. It's easy to feel that we can't make a difference. Our aim is to overcome feelings of isolation and helplessness by bringing people together to create a community of resistance. We hope the convergence inspires people to take action, share ideas and make a start in their own localities and spheres of interest after the convergence. The goals of the convergence are to:
- Promote a just, rapid transition away from fossil fuels
- Encourage ecologically based, community focused solutions to the climate crisis that foster local autonomy and self-sufficiency
- Promote “environmental justice” by encouraging support for communities and groups that are:
- Fighting dirty energy development in their own backyards
- Likely to or already disproportionately suffer the effects of climate change
- Historically disenfranchised from and oppressed by the existing power relations in our society
- Encourage non-violent direct action as a means for challenging dirty energy and empowering the movement to stop climate change
- Strengthen movements that are rejecting nuclear energy, mega-dams, “clean coal” technology, ethanol, and other false solutions to climate change
- Increase networking and strategizing amongst the diverse social justice and environmental movements opposing climate change, the energy industry, and environmental destruction
- Draw attention to business-friendly and industry sponsored plans for addressing climate change that are likely to exacerbate the climate crisis and other environmental problems
